竹工芸の作家との恊働作業で作られたパイプは、10月26(土)〜10月31(木)の６日間のみ、platform02にて展示されました。

会場に設置されたドキュメントブックに掲載のマテー・アンドラス・ヴォグリンキクによるテキストと、複数の写真をご紹介いたします。

私の作品制作は、その土地を訪れた時からすでに始まっています。

別府での作品もそうです。

My work, my installation starts when I come to the city.

Beppu in this case.

私は美しい建物に出会いました。それは、とても古い、波形のトタンでできた、美しい壁をもった家でした。

その壁には一本のパイプが取付けられていました。いえ、それはパイプではありません。それは、トマソンです。

I saw a beautiful building. A house, an old house. And a beautiful wall of that house.

Made from corrugated metal. Whit a pipe attached to it. Well it was not really a pipe anymore.

It was Tomason.

「トマソン」とは日本の美術家、赤瀬川原平によって名付けられたもので、路上に昔からある、しかし今はもう役に立たないもの、用途を失ったもの、そのために現代美術作品にも見えてしまうようなものを表しています。

これは読売ジャイアンツの元選手、ゲーリー・トマソンにちなんで名付けられました。彼はたくましい肉体を持ちながら、ヒットを打つことができなかった選手でしたから。

What is Tomason? 

Tomason is a name, invented by japanese artist Genpei Akasegawa for

 an ordinary but useless street object that happened to look like

contemporary art object. It was named after Gary Thomasson, a baseball player for Yomiuri Giants. He had a fully formed great body but he could not hit the ball.

そう、この壁のパイプは、パイプのような形をした、誰も気づくことのない芸術作品だったのです。近づいて見ると、そのパイプの端は屋根には付いていませんでした。そう、雨樋としての用途をも失っていたのです。

So this pipe on that building is a work of art shaped like a pipe

Just nobody noticed it. It takes a closer look to realize this pipe is not attached to the roof of that house anymore.

別府に居る間、私はソルパセオ銀座通りの中にあるplatform02という場所に滞在していました。

platform07の前を通るとき、そこではよく竹細工のワークショップを行っていました。通りを少し進むと竹細工の店があり、platform04でも竹の製品をたくさん見ました。気づけば私の周りには、竹が溢れていたのです。また、質の高い竹細工は九州から生まれることも知りました。

そこで私は今回の作品を竹を使って作ってみることにしました。竹で形作られたパイプ、竹で編まれたパイプを。

While I was staying in Beppu I lived on Sol Paseo Ginza. In a place known as Platform 02.I was passing platfom 07 where I saw bamboo weaving workshops almost daily.I few steps down the street there is bamboo shop. I saw lots of bamboo objects also in platform 04. It was a lot of bamboo around me. And top quality bamboo is coming from Kyushu I learned.

I decided I will try to make an artwork out of bamboo. A pipe in a shape of bamboo. In a shape of waved bamboo.

 

何種類もある竹の編み方の中で、私が一番気に入ったもの、それは幸運にも最も難易度の低いもので「六つ目」と呼ばれる編み方でした。

 

Using one of the patterns I like the most. And thankfully it is also the easiest one. It is called mutsume.

 

 

早速、六つ目編みを習い始めましたが、想像以上に難しいものでした。伊藤さんという素晴らしい先生をはじめ、制作には多くの竹細工職人の方々にご協力いただきました。

そう、この作品の大部分は彼らの作品で、実のところ、私はほんの少し手伝っただけなのです。

 

I was trying to learn how to wave. It was much more difficult than I imagined. I had a great teacher, Ito-san and I have other great bamboo masters to help me..

 

Well they did the majority of job. I just help a bit to be honest.

 

Platform02の床は、ちょうどあの美しい壁いくらいの大きさなのです。

皆さん、どうぞこの作品が、どんなパイプであったのか、想像してみてください。

You can look at it and imagine how it will look on the old house.
